Since 1951 the Color Camera of Westchester has been assisting and encouraging
photographers to expand their knowledge of the wonderful world of photography.
Centrally located in White Plains, CCCW fills its busy monthly schedules with
professional photographic presentations, evaluations, competitions, field trips
and semiannual weekend excursions providing Westchester County photographers with
a venue to discover and expand their photographic talents.
When I first visited the club about ten years ago, I must admit, I was a little
intimidated by the exceptional photographs I was viewing, but soon found that I too could
create similar works of art by learning from these seasoned shooters. Guest speakers
from the tri-state area present programs on all forms of photography. Programs on nature,
photojournalism, travel, close-ups and portraits have broadened my perspective,
stimulated my imagination and expanded my interest in photography.
Friendly competitions are held monthly, so members can be recognized for their artistic
endeavors. All submissions are judged by a distinguished guest photographer who not
only scores the entry, but also provides the entrant and the viewers with a constructive
critique of each photograph, creating a learning experience for everyone. Awards
are then presented to the top scorers.
Prior to our monthly competitions, members gather at another photographer's home to
have their photos evaluated by a senior competitor. Works are reviewed for proper
exposure, composition, technical quality and other characteristics that may assist the
photographer in submitting the best possible entries. This is additionally helpful
for future photographic situations. "Knowledge is the key," says Al from Scarsdale.
"Nature has provided wonderful subjects to photograph and it thrills me to capture an
image to display in my home or to give as a gift."
Favorites among our members are the field trips. The club has visited Playland, The
Bronx Zoo, NY Botanical Gardens, New Jersey's waterfalls, Mystic Seaport and a host of
other photogenic areas a short drive away. "I've learned so much. Club members are
always eager to help new photographers, which is why participation in field trips is
important." says Midge from Somers. Especially popular were the evening shoots at
the Tappan Zee Bridge and the sunsets along the spectacular Hudson River shoreline.
Weekend excursions to Rockport MA, Long Island's North Fork and the Amish country and
Longwood Gardens of Pennsylvania have proven to be fun, educational and popular social
functions.
Art critics more and more are recognizing photography as a legitimate art form. The
Color Camera Club participates in many gallery exhibits at local libraries year round
and members continue to be invited to participate in exhibits throughout the Westchester
area. Occasionally works are sold to appreciative viewers.
"The club has taught me to view subjects from a more artistic perspective and to be
creative. I've enjoyed having my images displayed in our gallery exhibits," says
Midge from Somers.
"I love the enthusiasm generated by the meetings and the benefits from mixing with
other photographers. Seeing a piece of art I created has encouraged me to expand my
photographic skills and has inspired me to learn, enabling me to approach new areas
in photography", says new member Nancy from Yorktown.
The club meets at 8:00pm most Mondays at the St Mathew's Lutheran church,
3 Carhart Ave., White Plains. Meetings are free and open to the public.
CCCW continues to afford members an opportunity to learn. Westchester photographers,
beginners to advanced, are more than welcome to come and enjoy our presentations, to
discover new avenues and to acquire fresh perspectives in photography. Contact Jerry
